There is nothing quite like glass. Glass packaging is made from four natural ingredients: sand, soda ash, limestone, and recycled glass. It is a trusted and proven packaging for health, taste and the environment. Glass should never be trashed. It can be100% endlessly recyclable, meaning a recycled glass container can become new glass over and over again without loss of quality.
As O-I uses recycled glass to make new glass containers, we use fewer raw materials and the manufacturing process itself requires less energy. By using recycled glass, which is called “cullet”, in our operation, we reduce our carbon emissions. The earth loves glass; it’s virtually inert and doesn’t leach chemicals into ground.
Making glass bottles is high-tech. Recycling them is super simple. For most consumers, recycling a glass bottle is as simple as placing it in the recycling bin at home or the local drop off. No worries if they’re broken. Once collected, glass is taken to a local material recovery facility. At this facility, glass is beneficiated to remove containments and other materials, colour sorted into green, amber (brown) and clear (flint) glass. This is now called cullet. This cullet is now ready to continue its journey back into our furnaces to make new bottles. Glass is infinity recyclable.
