It’s an important question to ask, because the notion is often far too narrow. Sustainability is not purely a “green” measure, and the terms “green” and “sustainable” are not proxies for one another. Glass is an endlessly recyclable material, and is made with recycled glass (called cullet), sand, lime and soda ash – non-reactive natural materials that are safe to reuse – glass can also be made on a closed-loop cycle.

Ahead of World Oceans Day on 8 June, Friends of Glass built custom pop-up checkouts in selected supermarkets that triggered a message of thanks from on-screen dolphins. Whenever a glass-packaged item was scanned, unsuspecting shoppers across Europe found themselves face-to-face with a pod of dolphins who thanked them for choosing glass.
